Arrested” *****
I’m Joel Stratte-McClure and the author of “The Idiot and the Odyssey” trilogy of travel narratives about my twenty-year walk around the Mediterranean Sea.
I had the good fortune to live in the south of France during the Medecin era and met Ilene Medecin (aka The First Lady of the French Riviera) at a political rally, where I was wearing a Jimmy Carter mask and she was a Ronald Reagan fanatic, in Nice in 1984.
Although political opposites, we’re the same age, both grew up in California and became friends who avoided political discussions and talked about our private lives, royalty, sex and parties. Occasionally I got a tidbit that I could use in stories I wrote for “People,” “The International Herald Tribune,” “Time” and other publications.
As a result of our friendship, however, I’m aware that “Arrested” is not only a riveting tale but is generally honest, accurate and amusing.
The reader will learn that not everything ends well, or even goes well, when a Hollywood heiress leaves the United States for life with the kingpin of the French Riviera.
Read it and you might want to stay at home instead of being seduced by a French minister and turned into a princess.
